New River Voice: Darrell Scott to Play Roanoke May 22

New River Voice's Notes
Darrell Scott to Play Roanoke May 22
Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 6:19am

Venerable singer/songwriter
Darrell Scott is set to perform at
Kirk Avenue Music Hall in Roanoke on Friday, May 22, at 8 p.m.
Corey Hunley will open the show.
It takes more than guts and good intentions to record a convincing
all-covers CD of songs by the modern-day pantheon of great
singer-songwriters, from Bob Dylan to Mickey Newbury to Joni
Mitchell. You have to add something special and personal to reignite
oft-heard standards—musical talent, sure, but also a depth of
feeling, experience and understanding. And Darrell Scott, an
award-winning songwriter of depth and perception and a versatile
instrumentalist, has earned that right.
Opening the night will be local performer Corey Hunley. Born in the
mountains of Franklin County, Hunley is a singer/songwriter who
mimics his style after the likes of Steve Earle, John Prine, Matt
Powell , and Paul Thorn to name a few. You can find him strumming
on his acoustic in most of the local venues. You can hear a mixture
of original and cover tunes from Hunley.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets for
the show are $30, available at Fret Mill Music in Roanoke, Rocket
Music in Blacksburg, Harvest Moon in Floyd, and
online. A portion of the proceeds
will be contributed to benefit the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.
